Week 14 nfl injury recap

This week’s injury slate is loaded with situations that could swing fantasy playoff matchups, and the headlines barely scratch the surface of what’s actually going on. From CeeDee Lamb and Tee Higgins' concussions to Achane's rib injury to Daniel Jones lost for the season, several big-name players are dealing with issues that impact overall reliability in ways the box score won’t show. Below is a clear, medical-backed breakdown of what each injury truly means for Week 15 and the fantasy playoffs, who’s likely to suit up, who’s a real risk, and who you simply can’t count on when it matters most.

Quarterbacks

Week 14 nfl injury recap

Jayden Daniels

Injury: Left elbow injury

Analysis: Daniels scared fantasy managers, Commanders fans, and football fans at large on Sunday after getting blocked to the ground and landing on his left elbow. Daniels was in immense pain and did not return. While this was scary, we knew right away that he did not technically "re-injure" his prior elbow injury but definitely banged it. His initial injury resulted in a hyperextension of the elbow due to him landing with an extended elbow. On Sunday, Daniels landed with his elbow near fully flexed, making it impossible to hyperextend again. The high-velocity impact with the ground will hurt significantly, but is unlikely to cause any lasting damage. Washington says they would like Daniels to play again this season; this most recent injury should not stop him from playing.

Daniel Jones

Injury: Right Achilles tear

Analysis: Jones' season is over, and the beginning of 2026 is in question. Jones' Achilles tear occurred unprovoked during a typical drop back. As Jones is dropping back, he wants to run to the right and overextends his back (right leg to push off and run. As his cleats push off the ground, his right leg is extremely far behind him, and he is unable to get his entire right foot onto the ground to push; instead, he pushes violently with only the balls of his feet, his ankle in a plantarflexed position. In many cases, this is fine, but the amount of force Jones was pushing off with, combined with his hip in extreme extension, and a slippery field, makes him unable to fully push off and change direction with the small surface area of his forefoot contacting the ground, resulting in a rapid dorsiflexion moment at the ankle, overloading the Achilles.

An Achilles tear is a 9-12 month rehab, sometimes more. A quarterback is much less reliant on running and usually can return in the 9-12 month timeframe; however, this is Jones' right Achilles. A right-handed passer must push violently off the right calf and Achilles for throw power, as well as stepping up in the pocket. Jones can return to 100%, but it's unlikely this will be achieved by week one.

Geno Smith

Injury: Right shoulder injury

Analysis: Geno injured his right shoulder and did not finish the game. Details are scarce right now, but more information should emerge as the week unfolds. This being his throwing shoulder, the exact tissues involved and severity make a massive difference for his week 15 outlook, though they make little difference for fantasy purposes, as Geno has not been good this season.

Tyrod Taylor

Injury: Groin strain

Analysis: Tyrod missed most of Sunday's game with a groin injury. Groin injuries play a big role in rotational movements, and throwing is all rotation. If Tyrod were to play through his injury, we could expect some impact on his throwing power and accuracy. Quarterbacks average missing under one game, but see a 23% dip in fantasy points when they return from injury.

Riley Leonard

Injury: Right PCL sprain

Analysis: Leonard has a grade I PCL sprain in his right knee. The rookie was thrust into action on Sunday to replace Daniel Jones and was in line to attempt to lead to Colts to the playoffs; however is likely to miss at least a few games now. A PCL sprain impacts knee stability. For a quarterback, this is less concerning compared to a running back or receiver, but it is still a big deal, especially being that this is Leonard's right knee. Leonard needs a stable right knee to push off for throwing power and to step up in the pocket. Returning too soon will lead to reduced throw power and mobility. Expecting Leonard to miss at least 1-2 games, but would not be surprised if it is more.

Running Backs

Week 14 nfl injury recap

De’Von Achane

Injury: Rib injury

Analysis: Achane landed on the football and missed the rest of the game with a rib injury. Per Achane, he could have returned, but Miami chose to hold him out. He had an MRI on Monday, and there have been no reports of any sinister injury; he likely is dealing with a bruise or mild cartilage injury. Rib injuries hurt, and many key muscles attach to them, including the pecs, the lats, and the obliques. These muscle groups are critical for holding onto the ball, twisting, and bracing for impact. Running backs average missing 1.3 games, so there is some concern that fantasy managers might not have their star running back for the first round of the playoffs.

Nick Chubb

Injury: Rib injury

Analysis: Chubb injured his ribs Sunday night and is in jeopardy of missing week 15. Chubb was quickly ruled out, and the lack of belief he can play this week makes it possible he is dealing with a fracture. Chubb has not been good this season and does not need to be rostered anyway.

Keaton Mitchell

Injury: Knee injury

Analysis: Mitchell has a knee injury and is considered day-to-day. This tells us no structural damage has occurred. Mitchell should be largely unaffected by this when he can return.

Wide Receivers

Week 14 nfl injury recap

CeeDee Lamb

Injury: Concussion

Analysis: Lamb's head slammed into the ground attempting to make a miraculous catch, leading to a concussion and posturing. Posturing, or involuntary reflexive motions of the hands and arms, indicates injury to the brain stem and is generally seen as bad. Lamb reportedly is feeling better quickly, but it would still be pretty miraculous if he can play in week 15 even with a few extra days. If Lamb does suit up, no performance dip is expected following a concussion.

Tee Higgins

Injury: Concussion

Analysis: Oh boy, this one is likely to spark some controversy in the NFL. Twice on Sunday, Higgins' head slammed hard into the snowy ground, prompting concussion screens. Twice, Higgins was declared safe to return to action. After the game, he began to experience concussion symptoms and is now in the protocol, for the second time in three weeks. Two confirmed concussions in three weeks significantly increase the length of recovery and return to action, and tacking on two violent hits to the head within an hour or two of one another only complicates things more. I'd be surprised if we see Higgins any time soon. Fantasy managers cannot expect to rely on him in the playoffs.

Alec Pierce

Injury: Undisclosed

Analysis: Pierce has an undisclosed injury that the team was amendment was not a concussion. We will look out for more details.

Malachi Corley

Injury: Concussion

Analysis: Corley has a concussion and will have to pass through the protocol.

Tight Ends

Week 14 nfl injury recap

Zach Ertz

Injury: ACL tear

Analysis: One of the best tight ends to ever play may have played his last down. Ertz right knee suffered a gruesome hyperextension injury, while also laterally rotated. We know his ACL is torn and needs surgery, I'll bet there is additional structures that need repair as well. At age 35, this will be very difficult to come back from. We'll see how Ertz does over the off-season rehabbing and if he is able to continue his career.

David Njoku

Injury: Left knee injury

Analysis: Njoku's left knee slammed into the turf while flexed, which often causes a PCL sprain (not officially confirmed). If this is a PCL sprain, Njoku's knee stability will likely be impacted for 4-6 weeks, rendering him largely useless for the fantasy playoffs. Harold Fannin Jr.'s stock will rise significantly if this is the case.

Darnell Washington

Injury: Concussion

Analysis: Washington suffered a concussion on Sunday. He will have to pass through the NFL's concussion protocol.
