Week 16 is the point of no return in fantasy football, and one bad injury decision can end your season. Saquon Barkley’s nerve scare, Kamara’s continued absence, risky returns like Drake London, and multiple concussion and knee situations are creating massive lineup traps that casual injury reports won’t catch. Below is a medical-driven breakdown of every key injury, explaining what actually impacts performance, re-injury risk, and snap counts, so you can make the right calls and survive the fantasy playoffs.

Quarterbacks

Week 16 nfl injury updates

Geno Smith

Injury: Back and shoulder injury

Analysis: Smith is on track to return in week 16 after missing week 15 with an injury to his throwing shoulder and his back. The Raiders struggled mightily without Geno, and his return will be welcomed. Having practiced in full all week, Geno is likely all but over his injuries. Acute back injuries typically respond well to treatment, and I would not expect the back injury to significantly limit his ability. An injury to the throwing shoulder can linger and impact throwing power and accuracy, easily aggravating it with either a bad hit or overuse in a game. Fantasy managers who have made it to round two of the playoffs are not relying on Geno; however, his return bodes well for Brock Bowers.

Running Backs

Week 16 nfl injury updates

Saquon Barkley

Injury: Stinger

Analysis: Saquon suffered a stinger on Sunday which knocked him out for a few plays, but ultimately finished the game without appearing to suffer any performance deficits. A stinger is an irritation to the nerves as they exit the neck and will have a wide range of impact. Nerve injuries have three different levels, each with a very sciencey name.

  1. Neuropraxia: Mild injury to the myelin sheath that surrounds the nerve. Symptoms include numbness, tingling, and burning that lasts for minutes to a few days. This is what most stingers are, and likely where Barkley's injury falls. No prolonged deficits is expected
  2. Axontmeosis: The nerve itself is injured, but not completely severed. Symptoms include weakness or paralysis, sensory loss, and pain. Recovery happens but extremely slowly (1mm/day). If this ever happens to a football player, their season is likely over.
  3. Neurotmesis: Complete severance of the nerve: Symptoms include complete paralysis and sensory loss. This would be career-ending.

Barkley's injury is undoubtedly a neuropraxia, or a very mild nerve disruption that is likely completely, or near completely, gone now. This will not affect his production in week 16 but it should be noted that the area of the nerve that was affected, as well as the entire nerve distal to the affected area, will be at a higher risk for injury.

Javonte Williams

Injury: Stinger

Analysis: Like Barkley above, Williams also suffered a stinger, returned, and played well. He has been limited in practice this week, indicating his symptoms may not be fully resolved yet, but it is believed he will play. Again, like Barkley above, he is most likely dealing with a neuropraxia and should be able to play just fine, but again, like Barkley, there is increased risk for re-injury.

Josh Jacobs

Injury: Knee injury

Analysis: Jacobs has powered through a knee bruise for several weeks now and produced at a high level, but each game he has aggravated said injury. This week, it appears he is on the wrong side of questionable and may miss week 16, but we'll see. Still, this is not a long-term issue, as there have been multiple reports that no structural damage has occurred. If Jacobs does miss week 16, that obviously sucks for the Packers and for fantasy managers, but his week 17 status should be promising. If somehow he does play today, he must be started.

Alvin Kamara

Injury: MCL sprain

Analysis: Kamara will miss his fourth straight game with an MCL sprain. We expected Kamara to miss significant time, as running backs average missing three games, and with Kamara's age, prior injury history, and the Saints being terrible, it was always expected he would miss numerous games. One can only wonder if the Saints even bother to bring Kamara back this season. If he does play in week 17, running backs average a 10-15% dip in fantasy points for three games after an MCL sprain. If you need roster space, you can drop Kamara.

D'Andre Swift

Injury: Groin injury

Analysis: Swift, who first injured his groin in week 6, then again in week 8 (and two times in 2024) is again on the injury report and was limited for multiple sessions this week. It's unclear if this is an aggravation of his prior groin injuries or new, but either way, it needs to be monitored. While the groin muscles are critical for sprinting and changing direction, generally they are not going to impact a running backs statline, as they average no decline in fantasy points. Swift remains a solid starter IF he suits up.

Woody Marks

Injury: Ankle injury

Analysis: Marks only logged one limited practice this week, putting his status for Sunday in question. Ankle injuries can impact a runner's ability to quickly change direction, and running backs average an 8% dip in fantasy production after an ankle injury. With Marks limited participation all week, even if he does play, I would expect him to see reduced snaps. He is a risky start this week.

Nick Chubb

Injury: Rib injury

Analysis: Chubb is expected to return this week, having logged multiple full practices. He missed one game with a rib injury, and this timeline typically indicates no fracture, but that is unclear. Running backs average a 17% dip in fantasy points after a rib injury, and Chubb has not been a reliable fantasy player this season.

Ollie Gordon

Injury: Ankle injury

Analysis: Gordon is off the injury report and will play after hurting his ankle last week. Running backs average an 8% dip in fantasy points, and Gordon has not established himself yet as fantasy-relevant. He is best left on waivers for now.

Quinshon Judkins

Injury: Groin injury

Analysis: Judkins carries no injury designation, indicating his groin injury is extremely mild. This will not impact him in week 16.

Devin Neal

Injury: Hamstring strain

Analysis: The Saints promising rookie (I am biased as I have him in multiple dynasty leagues) has been placed on the injured reserve due to his hamstring injury. Neal's season is over, but he will be fully healed by next season. Being 22 years old, muscle healing is extremely efficient, slightly reducing the likelihood of this increased risk for future injury.

RJ Harvey

Injury: Rib injury

Analysis: Harvey is cleared to play, with full practices this week after a mild rib injury. The mild tag, with no injury designation, suggests a bruise and not a fracture, and a mild bruise at that. With this in mind, it is less likely that any of the key muscles attaching to the ribs are affected in any way, and the usual 16% dip in fantasy points running backs encounter after a rib injury is unlikely to apply. Denver may reduce his snap rate somewhat, but Harvey should remain reliable for fantasy.

Chris Rodriguez

Injury: Groin injury

Analysis: Rodriguez is cleared from the injury report and will play through his groin injury. With him being fully off the injury report, his groin injury should not impact his fantasy stat line.

Dylan Sampson

Injury: Hand injury

Analysis: Sampson is out for week 16 with a hand injury.

Wide Receivers

Marvin Harrison Jr.

Injury: Heel injury

Analysis: Harrison suggests he will play this week following limited practices all week. The nature of his heel injury is unclear; however it likely follows one of two paths.

1: Plantar fasciitis, in which case it will feel fine when warmed up and not impact his production

2: Heel bruise in which case it also should feel better when warmed up but might hurt more throughout the game.

Either way, if he is good enough to play, his production levels per-play should be there. Arizona may elect to reduce his snap percentage, which would obviously take away from his upside. Harrison should still remain a WR2-flex this week, assuming he plays.

Drake London

Injury: PCL sprain

Analysis: London is expected to return from a PCL sprain this week, after missing four games. Four weeks is on the low-end of typical time missed with a PCL sprain, and while this is enough time to regain some, if not most of the stability lost from the injury, we would love more time. Players often look slow and have difficulty separating after a PCL sprain. This season, Brock Bowers and Ricky Pearsall have both struggled initially when returning from a PCL. Bowers has fully gotten his production back, seven weeks after the initial injury. Pearsall appeared to have it back last week, 11 weeks after injury, until he re-injured his PCL.

London is an immense talent who hogs targets, but this feels like a trap. I do not blame you for plugging him back into your lineups, and he certainly could have a nice outing, but I am very concerned for a major performance dip this week.

Tee Higgins

Injury: Concussion

Analysis: We should find out today if Higgins will play in week 16. Medically, there is no reason for him to play as Cincinnati's season is over and he has suffered two concussions in a short period of time. But for fantasy his production level's won't be impacted and he will be a solid WR2 if he plays.

Christian Watson

Injury: Chest injury/Shoulder Injury

Analysis: Watson appears likely to play through the chest and shoulder injuries from last week. Scans came back clean, and he is likely dealing with bruising and general soreness, but as long as the range of motion at the shoulder and torso is restored in time for the game, there is no reason for a major production hit. Receivers do average 18% dip in fantasy points after chest injuries, and 8% after shoulder injuries, which fantasy managers need to consider, but overall, if he suits up his outlook is solid.

Rashee Rice

Injury: Concussion

Analysis: Rice has been ruled out with a concussion.

Quentin Johnston

Injury: Groin strain

Analysis: Missed last week with a groin injury and has been limited all week in practice and is truly questionable. A groin injury would profile to impact a speed player like Johnston more than others; still, minimal fantasy impact expected as receivers average no drop off in fantasy points. He's always risky, but in this case, it wouldn't be because of the injury.

Rome Odunze

Injury: Foot stress fracture

Analysis: Odunze will not play this week and should not play until the playoffs. A stress fracture can only heal with rest, and it was outright insane that he prepared to play last week before aggravating his foot in warm-ups. He can be dropped in fantasy redraft leagues.

Tyler Lockett

Injury: Knee injury

Analysis: Lockett has been removed from the injury list, and his knee injury should not have any negative impact on him in week 16.

Rashod Bateman

Injury: Ankle injury

Analysis: Bateman will return this week. Receivers average a 10% dip in fantasy points after an ankle injury. He is not a high-priced fantasy asset and can be left on the bench.

Luther Burden

Injury: Ankle injury

Analysis: Burden will miss week 16 with an ankle injury. Receivers average missing right around one game, and if Burden can return next week, he may have a nice target share with Odunze expected to miss time.

Ricky Pearsall

Injury: PCL sprain and ankle injury

Analysis: Pearsall aggravated his PCL injury and injured his ankle last week. While reports suggest he is feeling better, these injuries combine for too much risk to trust him in the semi-finals. We saw how much time he missed from his PCL (6 games), and how poorly he played when he returned (1 catch for zero yards). We throw in an ankle sprain, in which receivers average a 10% performance drop afterwards. No thanks, even if he does play (Monday night by the way), I'd expect a major reduction in snaps and performance.

Dontayvian Wicks

Injury: Ankle injury

Analysis: Wicks, who is always on this list, is questionable to play tonight due to an ankle injury. He logged a few limited practices and has a real shot to play, but is not yet a fantasy relevant asset.

Devaughn Vele

Injury: Shoulder injury

Analysis: Vele has been placed on the injured reserve due to his shoulder injury and will miss the rest of the season.

Tight Ends

Dalton Kincaid

Injury: Knee injury

Analysis: Kincaid has been cleared from the injury report and will play through a mild knee injury. Kincaid has routinely played through knee and hamstring injuries this season and produced for fantasy while logging no more than 40% of snaps. I expect this trend to continue; he will be utilized on passing downs and on the sidelines on running downs, but still put up decent fantasy numbers.

Kyle Pitts

Injury: Knee injury

Analysis: Pitts is good-to-go while coming off the best game of his career. A mild knee injury has had him on the injury report to start both of the past two weeks, but as we saw last week, this won't impact his production. I would not expect another 100 yards and three touchdowns, but Pitts should remain a decent TE1 even with London back in the lineup.

David Njoku

Injury: Knee injury

Analysis: Njoku will miss week 16 with the knee injury he suffered while scoring in week 14. The injury looked like a PCL mechanism, though this has not been confirmed. I would not be surprised if we don't see Njoku the rest of the season.

Cole Kmet

Injury: Ankle and knee injuries

Analysis: Kmet has logged a few full practices this week but is still questionable with an ankle and knee injury. Tight ends average no drop-off in fantasy points from these injuries, and with Burden and Odunze out, if Kmet can play, he may see a larger target share.

Mason Taylor

Injury: Neck injury

Analysis: Taylor will miss week 16 with a neck injury but has a shot to return in week 17.
